Preston wins by just 103 votes...

Ben Preston has been re-elected to the post of SU President with a majority of just 103 votes. His Deputy, Peter Quinn, was also re-elected by a majority of 248 votes.

While Mr Quinn increased his majority from last year, Mr Preston's majority took a dramatic blow. Paddy Maguire ran a close second to Mr Preston with 442 votes to 545. This will send a shot over the President's bows as it signals discontent within the student body.

Turnout was poor with only 1004 valid votes in the election for President and 972 valid votes in the contest for Deputy President . Included in both polls was 41 spolit votes and 57 votes to re-open nominations.

Do these results represent the feeling of the student body?

Is Mr Preston's position within the Union in trouble?

What will happen in this forthcoming Thursday poll for the positions of the 3 VP's? Will this result have any effect?

clearly Preston should resign!

no doubt about it... everybody hates him and his executive don't respect him. Rumour has it he has locked himself in his office to ponder his horrible mistakes. Woe to the Union...

Preston benefited from the low turnout - had it been bigger Mr Maguire would have taken the seat. Better boot up the computer Ben for another game of solataire!

C. Gaskin is right - Preston's made no mistakes....because he hasn't bl**dy done anything. I disagree however that everyone hates him - in fact, he's simply humoured by those sick of his pointlessness as SU President.

Ah well....maybe this year he'll beat his own personal highest
score at minesweeper, eh #2!!!

They've blocked anonymous posting on Slugger, perhaps the Gown should do the same.

As The Gown blog is quite new, we feel it might be useful to leave anonymous posting for a little longer. We would obviously encourage all bloggers to get a username - even if it is not their real name.

Surely the fact that he has been re-elected shows that the student body are happy enough with the job that he's been doing?

PS

The fact stands however, that Preston's main rival was a joke nominee at best. If indeed Preston really was popular - particularly given the circumstances - would'nt he have won by more than 103 votes?

Alternatively, prehaps he was too busy playing solitare to mount a serious campaign... :-}

Maguire wasn't running for joke. Perhaps last year but to run again?? He had a lot of canvassers out on the day. Make no bones about it, if he had won he would have been into that office like a flash.

Head 2 heads are close, maguire was probably underestimated. Still the MBC carried Preston through. It'll be key again on thursday
