The SRC wants you!
- Barry Magee
On the 30th and 31st of October you students will go to the polls to elect a new Student Representative Council (SRC) for 2007/08. Students can vote online via Queen's Online (www.qol.qub.ac.uk).
For those students new to Queen’s, or for those current students who are unaware, the SRC is the body of students elected to broadly represent student interest within the union, the university and society as a whole.
The SRC role is to hold the executive to account, lobby the university on behalf of students, formulate Students' Union policy, to make decisions on a range of issues that affect students and to scrutinise the general administration of the Students' Union.
So why should you stand? Any student can apply. Students are encouraged to take part as the SRC can be a very rewarding experience and could certainly benefit a student’s CV. It can be a good way to make new friends and to have influence over what goes on within the SU and outside it.
This year focus will be on how many candidates the newly established QUB Greens and Fianna Fail at Queen's run.
Nominations for the SRC close on the 24th of October at 5 pm while open and post-graduate constituencies’ nominations will be opened after 24th October 2007. Voting will take place on 30th from 7 am and will close on 31st of October at 5 pm.
To all those who are thinking of putting forward a nomination, good luck!

DUA Chairman Thomas Hogg has been up and down to Brian Heading's office with council candidates almost everyday over the last fortnight.
I predict a large number of candidates from them. They are quite clearly having a huge push - watch this space.
Very worrying times.
I wonder how many oger sinn fein will have?
How much lower can they go? Will be hilarious to watch...if not a bit cringe worthy.
An Ogra SF source who works on the 2nd floor of the students' union says that they have over 100 candidates running.
Can anyone confirm this?
Queen's DUA seem to be very well organised this year.
Less greens, more oranges.
Okay, I'm kidding, but it would be good to either get a few more unionist representatives on the council for the sake of the protestant community at Queens which is...dare I say, not made to feel welcome at times?
Re the comment above:
OMG how more ridiculous can you get!?"
The only way in which Protestants and Catholics will continue to be segregated is through comments like yours; dividing people through religion and politics and constitution.
A candidate could represent your views, regardless of their religious background.
Thomas Hogg = DUA Stalin
DUP Stalin!
What because he actually makes an effort and wants his communities views represented.
Good times
"Thomas Hogg = DUA Stalin"
Can't be, that title was taken a long time ago, he must be Andropov or Chernenko.
Why does everything on this blog have to be so personalised?
1. Michal Harkin
2. Ciarnan Helferty
3. Thomas Hogg
A lot of people need to GET A LIFE!!!
Thomas Hogg - lil Mussolini
Well apparantly a predominantly nationalist union can't look after protestants properly, so maybe more representative numbers might help "even" things out a bit, no?
Yes, zing indeed.
We need councillors who are sexually attractive.
I've got my form in.
Why do you say that Eddie Hanna?
What has he ever done to you?
Do tell.......
I'd just like to know how the Protestant/Unionist community is being discriminated or not being looked after properly by the Union - what, are they handing out more green lollies than orange ones as part of the Sshh campaign? As for the whole issue surrounding people in Northern Irelnad jersies being refused admittance, it's hard to call that discrimination and was just a mix up, plain and simple. The NI supporters club has been wearing jersies to the Tuesday night societies quiz for at least the three years I've been here.
Perhaps if the Union actually got involved in the lives of students more, then perhaps 'the protestant community' might be able to shout about discrimination, because at the minute it's all complete bullshit!
PS what happened about complaints made about Eddie Hanna's great celebration of Ulster culture that ended in alleged cries of 'no surrender' and opther sectarian trife? Funny how such an event was given joint third place with a céilí by Cumann Gaelach which was sectarian free at last year's society awards - not a member of the Cumann but surely it should be able to complain against discrimation there - just shows the level of political correctness that operates in this place.

Thats because when the recordings were reviewed no such chants could be heard. Just some bitter folks trying to stir things up.
Queen Liz. This is yet another very lengthy comment and full of the verbal diarrhoea similar to that which Ciarnan Helferty usually spouts. Is this what the exec has come to!! Helferty is a man on some sort of save the world mission and single handedly bring about world peace. Then there's the inarticulate semi evolved ape i wonder who could that be...Mehole by any chance????
How many candidates have the YUs put up?
Well if the other one was two long then I'll simplify it - how has the Protestant Community veen disciminated against?
Helferty is a man on some sort of save the world mission and single handedly bring about world peace.
Not if I can stop him. Muh-ha-ha-ha-ha
By the way, that grammar is diabolical, why don't people at least scan what they write before they publish it.
David,
You have left Queen's now - just get a life.
why isnt the link to the arts humanities and social science candidates' mainfestos working?
I would appreciate it if whoever has been posting using my name would desist from doing so. If you are such a spineless, pathetic coward that you do not have the conviction to post under your own name you can leave an anonymous posting.
Neither of the two above comments are mine.
Robbie Davis-
When is PTQ going to be ready????????????????????????????????????????
We need to see a list of the meetings of the Students' Union executive and the attendance rate of all the sabbs and non-sabbs.
