Student Council E-mail Scam

The Gown has obtained a copy of a bogus e-mail sent to a select few recently elected student councillors claiming that tonight's inaugural meeting has been "regrettably" cancelled "due to unforeseen circumstances". The e-mail was sent to 29 council members including the Union President and was CC'd to the Vice-President of Education.

Dominic Doherty, the Student's Union Council Clerk whom the e-mail was falsely claimed to have been sent by, has subsequently communicated to all councillors that the e-mail should be disregarded. The scam has been labelled as an "attempt to subvert the democratic processes surrounding the Student's Union Council".

Mr Doherty has made assurances that the matter will be fully investigated and every attempt will be made to trace the sender of the e-mail with expulsion being stated as the appropriate penalty. Councillors are aksed to attend tonight's meeting (which will be held tonight at 6.15pm in the Club Rooms on the third floor of the Union) as a first step to resist the "anti-democratic agenda" the sender is pursuing.

Student's Union politics has always been a colourful state of affairs but this latest incident has managed to get people talking even before official business has begun.

Whoever did it, James Bond they weren't. How was the attendance, regardless?

The attendance was very good.

I'm sure Dominic is a happy man, he put in a lot of work and it's paid off!

Let's look forward to a positive year.

The poll on the SU website shows that 30% of voters are in favour of the proposed student contract.

How can this be?

Thread from the Gown please - real issue here!

The matter is being dealt with by the University's Computer services at present. The Gown can confirm that 'expulsion' refers to expulsion from the University.

Check out our next issue in early December for more updates.

The Gown team would like to remind all posters that comments insinutating that certain people/groups are responsible for this incident have no authority or evidence to back them up.

Although the comments wil not be removed they do not in any way reflect the views of The Gown team.

It is hoped that progress will be made in finding the culprit soon.

hi guys.

I was involved in the QUBSU in the late 90s - far more sectarian then than now (u may be surprised to hear).

good to see that there are still a few pranksters still about.

In my day there werent even agendas until the night of the meeting sowe didnt have an email problem.Although the fact that the (often politically aligned) Deputy President was inchange was probably worse though!

bit of advice (worthless as it probably is). Enjoy the SU because youleave it will seem so so petty. and quite a waste of time.

To all side- dont take it so seriously and just enjoy it. The University don't give a dman what happens in the SU anyway so go crazy if u must!

To the last comment, well said. 'Petty' and a 'waste of time' it is... Just something for all those try-hard students to put on their CV along with M.U.N. and other pointless pursuits. Get over it, it was just a prank... and expulsion! Ruin someone's academic career for interfering with pseudo-politics?! Sounds like the most exciting thing thats happened there for a while so fair play to you!
