Non-Sabbs ditched

The term ahead will no doubt see much more happening within the Union - from rivalry between election candidates, to ridiculousness and perhaps even some action from the Student Council.

The proposed ditching of the non-Sabbatical posts will come before the Council at the first meeting next week. It is thought the 6 part-time unpaid positions will be replaced by two full-time paid positions: VP Communities and VP Equality and Diversity. The current post of Deputy President is also in the offing to be replaced by a VP Communications and Campaigns. The largely inactive nature of this year's Non-Sabbs has been criticised and is thought to have been the catalyst for change. Those current 'duties' of the Postraduate Student Officer will also come under the remit of VP Education.

What do you think of the propsed changes? Was it time for the Non-Sabbs to go?

  1. With a Woman's Officer who seems unable to speak (or even visit the Union), and a SCA Officer whose version of "Community Action" is to tell people to wind their necks in, I think the Non-Sabs were doomed for the scrapheap after this year.

Perhaps with full-time officers in charge, vital areas such as community, equality and diversity will get the attention they deserve - instead of people merely seeking to improve their CVs.

  2. What about the others?

International Students' officer - what has he done??

    Caroline Lagan??

Alex Hobson - all group hugs and jumping on the band wagon of the moment.

  3. Ditch the sabbs as well!! They are nothing but a waste of money! There is nothing they do which can't be done (and be done better) by a member of staff!

It's nothing but an attempt to exercise already inflated egos and add more to CV's

Let's face it - if they weren't there the union would be a better place for it!!

  4. To the above 2 contributors-

Let's not single 1 or 2 of them out - they have ALL been useless!!

But why - God - why do we need more sabbatical officers? What are they going to do???

  6. it was about time the non-sabbs disappeared. they have been a waste of space for a long time.

i'm not too sure about the equality & diversity position though, i wouldn't mind seeing a job description to see what exactly comes under their remit.

wat about making another good move and withdrawing from the national unions and saving a bit of money for the SU there as well??
