Another Election Looms

By David Maxwell
Former Gown Editor

Thursday will bring another election to the Students' Union. After last weeks close run election for President, all candidates will be working hard to secure your vote. The election is for sabbatical posts as Vice President Clubs and Services, Vice President Education, Vice President Welfare.

Graham Barton, Kevin McGourty and Emma-Rose McGrady will be standing for VP Clubs and Services. Mr McGourty has held the post for two years and is expected to attract the Gaelic sports voting bloc. Graham Barton is currently in an non-sabbatical post and Emma-Rose McGrady is Secretary of Queen's Radio. The radio station is well on its way to becoming a political party within the Union after also fielding a candidate for President.

Chris Gaskin, Michael Forde and Rodney Gilmour are running for Vice President Education. Mr Gaskin is perhaps Queen's best know republican student.

Colin Caughey, Kat McCamley and Barry McColgan are running for Vice President Welfare.

In the last hours before the election take this opportunity to ask the candidates any questions you want answered. Give your predictions of the result and tell us who you think can best serve all the students at Queen's.

How's it going David. I'm not making any predictions of Thursdays result, certainly not publically anyway.

With all these media personalities running it's more like an Italian election than anything else :)

It's good to hear from you David, the Gown/Crown has been missing your Hugh Heff input ;)

Seems pointless voting in yet another round of elections.

Really what is the point?

Thanks Chris - although Hugh Heff may not have been as far from The Gown as you may have thought. I'm on the other side of the Irish sea at the moment working for a national newspaper - The Gown was a good starting place though.

All the best for Thursday.

Are any of the other candidates going to chip in on this blog?

Well, I thought i'd enter the electronic arena, and offer myself up to questions and such like.

The Campaign for a Better Union, that I and Rodney are pushing is, I feel, very important. Bringing some feeling of integrity back to the Union and simple, clear policies.

There has been all together too much politiking recently, but slowly and surely, irrestitably, the Union is changing. Bit by Bit, office by office. The times, the students, the university, and i feel we're the result of that.

Last day before the poll opens and where are all the candidates. Those who are posting please make others aware of the blog (even if they are standing against you). Its in everyones interests to have an open debate. (if that doesn't sound too much like David Cameron!)

What is up with Queen's radio fielding candidates? Is it really fair given they have been granted money by the university to provide a service to students, that they put up candidates? Of course they will say it is not offical-merely coincidental-but who really believes that?

The same naive people that believe that Ben Preston really said what is quoted by him on Chris' manifesto?

Nice to see The Gown features in your manifesto Mr Barton - but we should make it clear that we do not support any candidates and wish everyone good luck with tomorrows contest.
