The Snack(less) Room...

This time of year sees the library full to capacity with students up to their necks in coursework, exam revision...and general student-style tardiness on work they were too busy (getting ready for the Union on a Monday night) to do during the year.

24 hour opening of the Seamus Heaney library in the last few weeks of term allows people to work round the clock if necessary.

And, if one should be typing like a creature possessed at 2am when suddenly struck with a ferocious thirst, they can make their way to the snack room where the vending machines provide a wide range of drinks and snacks - the fuel required to punch out those extra 1000 words for that dissertation due the next day. Or can they?

Lately the facilities have been dire - a snack room void of snacks, less water than the Sahara desert. Surely with extended opening hours the provision of extra food and drinks should be taken into consideration. It may seem like a petty problem but when its early morning and you're parched only to find the little red light on the vending machine is flashing AGAIN so you can't quench your thirst it can be pretty frustrating to say the least...

Anyone else agree?

A snackless snack room, but don't despair! the gown is available in the seamus heaney making all breaks a relaxing, albeit, foodless break!

Never mind the vending machines i find the lack of toilet roll in the female toilets a complete disgrace! ive been to the heaney the last 4 nites and not one of those have i found any toilet roll, luckily i learned after the first nite and found myself handing out tissues to other students in need. Surely its not too much to ask that a library has toilet roll and food in the vending machines!

Never mind the snacks, what really takes the biscuit* is when you've got a 4:45 deadline on your disertation and at 3:00 (sorry but I actually view that as being well ahead of schedule and organised) you go to start printing and discover that the system for buying print credit has crashed. The technician helpfully sugests that you go and feed change into one of the machines to add credit to student card so that you can then put your student card into another machine to transfer credit to your print account, but you haven't got any change, certainly not enough for 80 colour prints. The IT systems in this place can be useless at times, try finding a computer that works in the Ashby computer room.

You will all doubtless be glad to know that I got my disertation in at 3:45 a full hour early. This was as a result of me going to Windsor Printing on the Malone Road and paying a professional to print it. The service was excellent and the technical guy looked like he could be bothered.

* see what I did there

Should 24hr opening be allowed at all? That would be a good story for the Gown!

It encourages late night studying, which is bad for you mentally.

Students' have varied studying patterns however I think that Queen's should review their 24hr opening policy as it is not in the interests of their students'.

Sean in the interestS of freedom and liberty students should be able to study at a time of their own choosing wouldn't you agree.

Yes they should but the university is encouraging a bad study routine that is unhealthy for the human mind and body

Surely you could just plan in advance and bring whatever food and drink you may need to see you through the night with you. It's hardly rocket science.
