Queen to visit Queen's...maybe

Tonight's student Council meeting proved that Northern Irish society truly has moved on from the dark days of the past. A motion to invite the Queen to the University in this, its centenary year, was not only passed by an overwhelming majority but was enthusiastically welcomed by most present at the gathering.

Proposed as a fitting recognition to the University's name (after the current Queen's great grandmother), the motion took a very short time to be passed, compared to other motions on the night - due to its high level of relevance to the student body? Or perhaps due to a tongue-in-cheek attitude taken by the majority of voters?

VP Welfare, Ciarnan Helferty offered his spare bed in response to a concern over the financial feasability of a visit from Her Royal Highness. However Cllr Michael Shilliday subsequently reassured councillors that "the Royal Household" pays for such visits.

It is not yet known when the invitation will be sent, or if Liz (in the interests of not offending anyone reading this: Betty, M'am and all the rest) will indeed take up the offer of a day at "this fine institution".

We await your response with bated (minty fresh) breath your Majesty!

When a Student Council vote against an anti-fees motion you know student union politics has changed!

Instead they'd rather waste their money on track suits, Sarah's mascara, and two new sabbatical officers.

WhaHey for students politics!

lets be honest Daniel Waldron, your tokenistic 'socialist' protest wouldn't have changed anything at all.

and maybe your motion didn't pass because this is the first time the socialists have turned up to council all year

Just like to point out that the person posting before as me wasn't me (hence the wrong website address), but I think a lot of the responses say quite a bit about the people who 'run' the 'Union'. A friend told me someone had put it up.

However, quite a few of the responses here say a lot about the people who run the 'Union'. I shudder to think we will ever have any credibility among the careerists and sectarians who dominate council.

A council, by the way, which is totally irrelevant to students because the organisations which dominate student politics here have shown themselves to have nothing to offer students whatsoever, resulting in people having no interest in it at all.

Actually leading students to take action over an issue which I know many (ordinary) students are very angry about may have been a small step towards rectifying this. It was because we wanted a broad, large protest organised by the Union that we put the motion forward. But no, let's have sectarian bickering, invitations to unelected heads of state and anal debates over changing sentences in the constitution instead...

And one of our members has been at every meeting to keep an eye on things, but as you can probably guess from the rest of my post, our attitude is generally that we have better things to do with our time.

Point of information... Get a life!

the failure of that motion shows that socialist councillors are correct not to see the point in showing up to the council which is full those who want somthing nice on their CVs are training in how to sweet fa for their constituent when they grow up to become MLA's

god help us!!!
it would be to much to be seen to be doing anything concrete for students.

God save our gracious Queen,1
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.

O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen.

We need to practise this

Shame on the proposer and seconder of this sectarian piece of business.

Messrs Mark Ovens and Michael Shilliday - your cards have been marked.

Obviously trying to out-do the DUA in the bigoted loyalist stakes.

What next?

Its the Queens University of Belfast and so how can tis be sectarian?

I have no doubt that the motion was there to ruffle feathers - but what odds is it?

Bit of fun, no one took it seriously

I took it seriously. Apparently that makes me sectarian. Of course the real bigots are those who think the National Anthem contains the words "fustrate their popish tricks". Which it doesn't.

Also, I said that as far as I'm aware the Royal Household foots the bill. I can't say that I'm any authority on the matter.

Shame on you.

Mr Shilliday,
I agree with you whole heartedly, because someone has a cultural/historical/political opinion that is not 100% centre ground and focuses not on the "more worthy political causes" of international politics e.g. Amnesty International, Greens etc. does not make them a bigot.
In fact it is they who have such a snobbery for NI politics, amongst certain members of "the powers that be" in the SU and try and suppress such opinions or deride those who hold to them are actually the Bigots.

However dispite my agreement with you on most points I have to disagree on your holding to the "Knavish" as opposed to "Popish" as the wikipedia is not a credible website to quote to prove your point.

Is anyone else worried that the retards who make up the political parties at Queens are more than likely to be the same retards who will be our future government in Stormont?

Good grief. We're screwed.

"No. Not just the alliance party. EVERY damn one of you. You're as bigoted and argumentative as the last lot. Its WORSE than schoolboy behaviour."

A Nice hasty generalization there, "every damn one of you" suggesting that every member of the political parties at Queens is in itself bigotry, unless you can say you know each member personally. If you do then please give us your real name and we will check that "each damn" member knows you.

Your above statement by merely saying it proves nothing about any of the parties bigotted perspectives or argumentitiveness but it does it says a lot about your own. I shall conclude with the words of the Proverb "People in green houses shouldn't throw stones".
