Non-Sabbactical election results
AFTER yesterday's election poll the following candidates have been returned:
Cultural Affair's officer: NATALIE SIMPSON;
International Students' officer: LIANG YOONG CHIA;
Mature Students' officer: CLARE BAILEY;
Student Community Action officer: EDWARD HANNA;
Women's officer: JENNIFER HILL;
Postgraduate Students' officer: MICHAEL CURRIE.
All the above posts, except for that of Postgraduate officer ran against Reopen Nominations (aka RON).
Michael Currie is a second year undergraduate student and took victory over his two postgraduate student rivals; Ciara Burnell and Chris Odgen. He ran a campaign under the 'Campaign for a Better Union' banner along with his colleagues Ed Hanna and Jennifer Hill. The 'Campaign for a Better Union' swamped to victory last year winning the same posts with the exception of Cultural affair's which ran uncontested this year. Mr Currie succeeds Graham Barton.
Natalie Simpson succeeds Mark Hill. She was active during the Deputy Presidency of Patrick Hughes, who threw the Union into much controversy during his time in office. She is associated with Queen's Sinn Fein and advocates much interest in Irish Lanaguage and Culture. At a Council meeting earlier this year she proposed that the Union go bi-lingual in the form of English and Irish. The meeting did not however meet quorum, partly because members refused to enter the Council chamber in protest.
Jennifer Hill who succeed's Sinead McGuinness has been an active Council member during her time at Queen's and has assocations with the DUA.
Apathy and disinterest from the student body seems to have affected this election with 5 of the 6 positions running practically unconested, be it against RON. Figures for turnout are not yet available but it is predicted to have been poor.

Has the Gown no comment to make on the types of motion Eddie, Jennifer and Michael put before council this week?
Or are inapropriate council motions only of concern to the Gown whenever they don't approve of them?
And what was wrong with the motions? Should we not congratulate our Monarch on her birthday, and our most eminent politician on his? Should we accept that the University administration allowed a disgraceful and insulting exhibition on convicted terrorists to be given a propaganda platform in University property?
If members of Council still want to wish Ian or the Queen happy birthday why not go through Exec. I am sure either Ed, Mark or Graham could put it on the agenda? Exec I am told meets weekly and unlike Council it's remit is not confined to recommendations.
If members of Council would like to sing a version of the National Anthem.. why not bring it up at Executive as well?
Why not?
Because they are designed to be as divisive as possible and served no purpose other than an attempt at sectarian triumphalism. But they, who expects much better from the DUA?
* But then
hush ron why not give us your name
To get this back on topic, congratulations to 'Big Mike' who defeated two Postgraduates for his post. I'm sure his two running mates will continue the good work under the 'Campaign for a Better Union' banner.
Joe Mangel - I've heard this slogan 'Campaign for a Better Union' quite a lot but I'm not to sure what it means. Can you help me out?
thanks very much for the words of congratulaions. it couldn't have happened without all the hard work of those around me and my two running mates, so a big thanks to them!
Not to take anything away from 'Big Mike', it's a bit odd for Joe Mangel to feel proud of the fact that an undergraduate defeated two postgraduates in the election. This completely undermines his legitimacy as an officer.
i dont really think it does, i took a year out after school, so next year when i will be post grad officer, ill be the same age as many of the post grads and infact i have many friends who already are post grads those who are going onto become post grads. i can relate to them, i will listen and learn from the post grads in queens themselves, i will always be open to that. at the end of the day it comes down to who can get the job done the best for the students, and the results back what i firmly believe - im the man to get the job done the best.
But what's 'Campaign for a Better Union' all about 'Big Mike'?
For those wanting to know about the "Campaign for a Better Union". Why not have a look at the Manifesto? It's available on the Students Union website, in the exec section.
Manifesto
that manifesto is flipping hilarious
unless it's last years?
because half those people weren't running. going to assume the manifesto hans't been updated in a year then.
This is true. It's the only one that is available online. But it gives you an idea about what the Campaign is about. The declaration and the preamble are the important sections. Highlighting the beliefs behind the movement, as opposed to specific promises which have changed as they have been achieved or circumstances have evolved.
